Education and childcare in Zaanstad
Pupils who are new in the Netherlands will attend special schools for newcomers. In the Netherlands education is compulsory for children aged 4 and over. Your children can attend school in Zaanstad.
Children aged between 2 and 4 can attend preschool (playgroup) as offered by childcare organisations such as Babino and Freekids. You can find more information at https://babino.nl and www.freekids.nl.
Children aged between 4 and 12 can attend primary school at De Kernschool in Zaandam. For more information about how to register with De Kernschool please send an e-mail to email@example.com or visit the school's website: www.kernschool.nl.
Children aged between 12 and 18 can attend secondary school, for example the International Bridging Class in Krommenie. They can register by sending an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org. You can find more information about the international bridging class at https://isk-zaanstad.nl.
The children of working and non-working parents from Ukraine can attend nursery school if they are aged between 0 and 3 years old. Children aged 4 to 12 years old can attend the after-school club outside of school hours. However, you will have to pay for this. You may be entitled to a central government contribution to the costs. This is known as the childcare allowance.
In the Netherlands there are 2 kinds of childcare:
- Nursery school. For children aged between 0 and 3 years old.
- After-school club. For children aged 4 to 12 years old. The after-school club is available outside of school hours and in the holidays.
